Full Plot[]

After Bex dropping the bombshell that she doesn't want to marry Bowie, Andi is not willing to accept it. Bex tells Andi that she had already made up her mind not to marry Bowie. She just wasn't ready to tell Andi about it. Andi tries to convince Bex that she and Bowie are meant to be married because they love each other. But Bex claims that just because they love each other doesn't mean they have to get married.

Andi asks Bex if Bowie knows that Bex won't marry him and Bex says he knows although she hasn't told him yet. Andi worries that it's going to break Bowie's heart but Bex promises to tell him the next day. But they both remember that the next day is Chinese New Year.

Now that the track season is over, both Buffy and Marty are looking for a new sport to signup for. Buffy finds Marty signing up for basketball and decides to sign up for basketball too. The only twist is: it's the boys' basketball team because Jefferson Middle School does not have a girls' basketball team.

While dressing up for Chinese New Year after school, Andi asks Buffy about her relationship with Marty and whether their couple name should be "Barty" or "Muffy" but Buffy says nothing is going on between her and Marty. Andi tells Buffy about how every year Cece goes over the top to make the Chinese New Year party perfect to impress Aunt Mei. Buffy remembers how stressful the festival was because she had attended it previously. But Andi assures her that she doesn't have to come this year.

Jonah Beck comes over to Bex's apartment to return Andi's phone because Andi had dropped it in the cafeteria. He finds Andi all dressed up for Chinese New Year feast and asks about it. Andi accidentally invites Jonah to the festival. She tries to think of a way to uninvite him or at least have Buffy join them to avoid the awkwardness but no luck. Jonah goes home to change. Buffy leaves to go to the gym. Andi is left freaking out on what to do. Bex advises her to let CeCe know in advance because she doesn't like surprises.

At the gym, Cyrus helps Buffy practice basketball shoots. Marty joins them but the competition heats up between them. Buffy declares herself the MVP which doesn't sit well with Marty. Marty leaves the gym mad, claiming that Buffy should learn to be a team player and not just be the best player. Afterwards, Buffy admits to Cyrus that she is nervous because she can't make the team if she's just as good as the boys. She has to be better than everyone else.

At the Mack's house, Bowie is helping Ham and Celia cook for the feast. Celia is really impressed by Bowie's cooking. She tells Bowie he should stay around and consider their home as his home. He's part of the family since he's Andi's dad... unless he wants to add another title to that. Bowie, thinking about his proposal to Bex, tells Ham and Celia that they might in fact have good news soon. This gets Celia excited that Bex and Bowie might get engaged. Celia can't wait to confirm the engagement and shove it in her sister's face.

After their arrival, Bex tries to signal Andi to tell Cece about Jonah joining them but Andi doesn't get a chance to tell her before Jonah knocks on the door. Cece is not happy to see Jonah because she knows for sure that he's not one of Andi's friends. Andi and Bex manage to contain the situation so it's not a total disaster.

Aunt Mei and her magic-obsessed grandson Ronald arrive. She starts bragging right away and making fun of Celia. She hits a nerve when she calls Celia "granny" because Celia hates being called a grandmother. The tension heats up between Celia and Mei. After introducing Bowie to Aunt Mei, Celia is ready to "win" the Chinese New Year. So, she needs something big to tell Aunt Mei. She asks Bex about the happy news Bowie was talking about. But Bex is not ready to talk about the proposal. Bex's denial helps Celia realize there's actually a proposal. But she doesn't know that Bex is planning on refusing to marry Bowie.

Meanwhile, Jonah has a hard time understanding what's really going on. It doesn't help that Ronald comes over and starts pulling magic tricks on him. In addition, he's starving and can't wait to eat. During the ritual where the family prays to the shrine of their ancestors, Jonah can't wait anymore. He quickly takes a dumpling to eat hoping no one notices. It's a total embarrassment because everyone sees him. And it turns out the dumplings are not for eating, they're for the ancestors. Everyone starts freaking out about who Jonah is. Aunt Mei thinks he's Andi's boyfriend but Bowie and Celia say Andi doesn't have a boyfriend. Celia says Andi is not allowed to have a boyfriend. But Aunt Mei makes fun of Celia for being terrible at enforcing rules. Celia freaks out and Ham calms her down.

During the gifts ceremony, Ham, Celia and Aunt Mei hand over envelopes with money to the kids, including Bex. Aunt Mei makes it clear that she's giving one to Bex because she's still not married. She brags about her married daughter Ling. Celia cuts off the conversation by handing out her envelopes. She gives Andi and Bex ten dollars each but gives Bowie hundreds of dollars. She takes a special moment to thank Bowie for being part of their lives. Celia tells Bowie if he has any announcement, good news to share, he's would have her blessings.

Bowie rises to speak and announce about the potential engagement with Bex. Andi sadly mouths Bowie not to continue because Bex would say no. Bowie gets it and sadly leaves the room. Andi tells Celia and Ham what's going on. Bex walks after Bowie to explain that she's not marrying him. In near tears, Bowie leaves the house. Andi sees him off and gives him a hug. He says he is not okay but he will be.

Needless to say, the Chinese New Year feast ends in disaster. Celia finally gets the courage to get rid of Aunt Mei's cuckoo clock that they have to hang up every year. She kicks Aunt Mei and Ronald out.

Back at their apartment, Andi is looking for something to eat because she didn't eat much, since there was so much going on at the feast. She finds a hidden box of Toaster Tarts. Bex tries to stop her from opening the box but it's too late. Inside the Toaster Tarts box is that picture of the boy Andi found in "Shhh!." Bex had claimed that he was nobody and ripped it apart and threw away. But apparently after that, Bex took the picture out of the trash, taped it together and put inside another box of Toaster Tarts. Bex tries to calm Andi down, claiming that he's nobody but Andi doesn't buy it. He's not nobody. Who is he? Is he the real reason why she can't marry Bowie?

Trivia[]

  • Giving a clock as a gift is considered bad luck in Chinese culture, so it is very bizarre that Mei gave one to her sister, and even stranger that Celia kept it as long as she did.
  • It was revealed Bowie and Bex were not getting married.
  • It was revealed that after Bex ripped the photo from the toaster tarts box in Shhh!, she taped it back together and put it back in the toaster tart box without Andi knowing. Also, it was revealed that the photo wasn't Bowie, but someone else.
  • Cyrus and Buffy were in very few scenes.
  • This was Marty's first appearance in Season 2.
  • This was the first Chinese New Year and the first holiday themed episode on the show.
  • Jonah said that Easter in his house is weirder than Chinese New Year in Andi's house.
